Krytonite – Part of a Better Protection System for Vulnerable Construction Joints

Across the globe, the construction industry is shifting its focus towards sustainable structures. With growing infrastructure, and limited budgets, designers are constantly looking for ways to increase durability. Key materials are carefully selected for their sustainable properties, but vulnerable areas are often overlooked, making structures susceptible to premature deterioration.

Construction joints are such vulnerable areas, and play a vital role in fortifying concrete structures. As a direct route to the rebar and to the inside of the structure, how easily water and moisture can enter through these areas can make or break a project’s budget and/or timeline.

In response to the need for a better joint waterproofing system, Kryton released a newly developed technology in 2015: Krytonite Swelling Waterstop.

With a long list of performance based features and benefits, there is little wonder why Krytonite Swelling Waterstops have been steadily replacing Bentonite as the waterproofing strip of choice on jobsites around the world. Krytonite offers unrivaled swelling performance, superior cohesion properties, and easy installation. Moreover, when Krytonite is used with Krystol Waterstop Treatment, it offers Dual Protection that not only stops water, but protects outboard facing rebar from the damaging effects of water.

Krytonite's advanced synthetic rubber technology has been designed to swell up to 4 times more than conventional swelling waterstops. This superior technology also exhibits greater swelling pressure to stop water in horizontal and vertical construction joints-even when exposed to salt and chloride water or contaminated soils.

Swelling capability, which typically relates to water stopping ability, is unrivaled, as is evident through the products early success. Through time lapse imagery, Kryton has captured Krytonite's swelling capability which provides a visual of its unconstrained swelling capability.

With prolonged water exposure, Bentonite (clay based) waterstops can deteriorate over time. Krytonite exhibits excellent cohesive properties and will not deteriorate over time-even when exposed to extreme hydrostatic pressure and after repeated swelling and drying cycles. Superior cohesive properties when in a swollen state will lead to longer water stopping ability and lifelong performance.

Krytonite can easily replace common swelling waterstops to offer the best single protection waterstop available. Additionally, Krytonite can be used with the Krystol Waterstop Treatment as part of Kryton's Dual Protection Krystol Waterstop System (KWS).

When Krystol technology is used with Krytonite, it provides a crystalline barrier before the water can come into contact with the outboard facing rebar. Protection of the perimeter rebar from the corroding effects of water will add long term durability to the concrete structure.

Krytonite is also extremely durable and will not deteriorate or lose performance, even when subjected to repeated wetting and drying cycles. Other benefits of Krytonite are:

  • Resistant to hydrostatic pressure and will last the life of the concrete;
  • Saves you time and money on your waterproofing project;
  • Easy to install using Krytonite adhesive, and
  • Has superior chemical resistance.

The new Krytonite Swelling Waterstop is available now, contact a distributor in your area for more information on how it can be used on your next project.
