The October 2012 Issue of Aquatics International Magazine featured an interesting piece on poor state of America’s aquatic centers. Half of all operators interviewed reported that their facilities were 20-years old or older; that age and constant use leads to problems with concrete cracking and leaking if not originally protected during construction. One operator interviewed in the magazine had this to say “Over the previous 60 years millions and millions of gallons leaked through that joint eroding a vast cavern under the pool basin,” Gibbs says “A cavern large enough to stand up in – and a space large enough that could have easily swallowed up most of the pool had the concrete basin collapsed.”
Leaking pools can lead to numerous issues including sanitary, structural and financial problems. Pool operator’s budgets are already stretched thin but proper repair and maintenance can save money down the line. One way to protect your pools and investment is to inspect for cracks, leaking pipe penetrations and leaking joints and fill them using Kryton’s Krystol Crack Repair System.
